The marketplace

A free listing for every African-owned business

Barbers, caterers, tailors, accountants, grocers, tutors, hauliers, DJs. If you serve the community, the directory should carry your name — and it costs nothing to be in it, anywhere in the world.

How it works

Four things worth knowing before you submit

The directory is being rebuilt alongside the magazine, so it is open for submissions now and listings will appear here as they are processed. Send yours in — the earlier you are in, the longer readers have to find you.

Free

No fee, ever

There is no listing charge and we take no commission on work you win through the directory. There is no paid tier that puts you above anyone else.

Reviewed

A person reads it

Every submission is read by a human before it goes up, mainly to catch spam and to check that what you have sent is complete enough to be useful.

Worldwide

Anywhere you trade

The continent, the diaspora, or both at once. If you sell to two continents, say so — that is exactly the kind of business readers are looking for.

Yours

Change it whenever

New number, new address, closed for good — write to us and we will update or remove the entry. You do not have to explain yourself.

A listing is not an endorsement. We publish what businesses tell us about themselves. We do not inspect premises, verify qualifications, accredit anyone, or vouch for the quality of any work. Check credentials yourself before you hire or pay a deposit — for trades that are regulated, that check is usually a licence number you can look up.

Categories

What belongs in the directory

These are the categories we start with. If your trade is not on the list, submit it anyway and tell us where it belongs — the list is meant to grow.

01

Barbers, hair & braiding

Shops, mobile braiders, loc technicians and barbers working from a chair at home.

02

Catering & food

Restaurants, takeaway kitchens, event caterers, bakers and cooks who deliver.

03

Tailoring & textiles

Seamstresses, tailors, aso-oke and kente traders, alterations, uniform makers.

04

Groceries & provisions

African and Caribbean grocers, spice and palm-oil sellers, frozen-food suppliers, importers.

05

Accounting & tax

Bookkeepers, tax preparers and accountants who know what a first-year business return looks like.

06

Legal & immigration advice

Paralegals, lawyers and consultants. Check the licence: in Canada, immigration consultants must be registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants, and lawyers with their provincial law society. Ask for the number.

07

Tutoring & language schools

Weekend heritage-language schools, maths and science tutors, exam preparation, music teachers.

08

Music, DJs & events

DJs, live bands, MCs, photographers, decorators, hall hire and party organisers.

09

Beauty & skincare

Nails, lashes, skincare, makeup artists and products made for deeper skin tones.

10

Freight, haulage & removals

Couriers, shipping agents, consolidators, house movers and airport runs.

11

Housing & property

Realtors, landlords, cleaners, handymen and renovation crews.

12

Health & wellbeing

Care workers, mental-health practitioners, fitness coaches, traditional practitioners and herbal suppliers.

Add your business

Send us the listing

About three minutes. Fields marked with an asterisk are required; everything else helps readers find you but is optional.

We read every submission. If yours is accepted it appears at the next update of the directory.

Thank you — your listing is ready to send

Questions

Before you send the form

If your question is not here, ask us — we would rather answer it once on this page than fifty times by email.

Is it really free?

Yes. No listing fee, no annual renewal, no commission on any work you win because a reader found you here. We do not offer a paid tier that ranks above the free one, because a directory that takes money for position is an advertisement page rather than a directory.

Who can be listed?

Businesses that are owned or run by people of African descent, and businesses that serve African communities — anywhere in the world. It is self-declared: you tell us, and we take you at your word rather than asking for documents nobody should have to send a magazine.

Do you check that a business is genuine?

We check that a submission is complete, coherent and reachable — that there is a real way to contact someone. We do not inspect premises, verify licences or qualifications, or test any service. Treat every listing as a starting point for your own checks, exactly as you would a sign in a shop window.

How long before my listing appears?

Submissions are reviewed and published together at the next update of the directory, rather than one at a time. We will not tell you a fixed number of days and then miss it — if something is holding your listing up, we will write to the address you gave us.

Can I change or remove my listing later?

Yes, and you do not have to justify it. Write to the marketplace desk from the email address on the listing and we will correct it or take it down. See the Terms of Use for how removal works if a listing breaks the rules.

Will you pass my details to anyone else?

No. We do not sell contact details or share them for anyone else's marketing. The details you supply for publication go on the public listing; anything you leave blank stays private. How we handle all of it is set out in the Privacy Policy.

I am not African-owned. Can I still be listed?

If your business genuinely serves African communities — a shop stocking African groceries, a studio teaching African dance — then write and tell us what you do and we will consider it. What we will not do is fill the directory with businesses that simply want the traffic.
